Sports Hall of Fame

The Sports Hall of Fame was created to acknowledge the athletic achievements of those in the County of Brant community. Ceremonies are held in Burford, Paris and St. George.

Burford

  • Congratulations to Bob Coyne, our 2025 Inductee in Burford

Bob Coyne

Year of Birth: 1946

  • A lifelong advocate for inclusive sport and youth development, Bob Coyne’s coaching and leadership career spans over five decades across ice hockey, track and field, and inline hockey.
  • Began coaching in 1966 with Shallow Creek Outdoor Youth Hockey
  • Coached athletes in the Ontario Blind Sports program and at W. Ross Macdonald School for the Blind (1969–1998), leading programs in cross country, track and field, hockey, baseball, and football
  • Power skating instructor for the Wayne Francis Power Skating School (1977–1984), and founder of the Bob Coyne Power Skating School (1984–2018)
  • Provided power skating training for elite junior teams including the Brantford Alexanders and Hamilton Steelhawks
  • Coached numerous championship-winning OMHA teams in Burford and Paris, including a bronze medal win at the Stockholm Cup in Sweden (1986)
  • Founded and operated Major Jr. A Hockey Camps (1981–1990)
  • Offered skate sharpening services at the World Junior Hockey Championships (1986)
  • Led Brantford and Burford Minor Hockey Association teams through AAA, rep, and Mini Mac programs (1978–2018)
  • Guided teams to international tournaments in Sweden, Finland, and Russia
  • Recognized with the BMHA President’s Award (1994–95, 2009–10)
  • Served as President of both Brantford and Burford Minor Hockey Associations
  • Contributed to the development of inline hockey as a coach and mentor, earning four gold and one silver medal coaching Team World Inline (1999–2004)
  • Named Coach of the Year in 1997 after leading the Brantford Thunderhawks to the Walter Gretzky Cup Championship
  • Consultant for Team Canada Inline and Head Coach of the University of Pittsburgh Panthers Roller Hockey Team
  • Represented Brantford at the International Children’s Games (2004)
  • Founding member of the Ontario Minor Roller Hockey Association
  • Honoured with the June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award for Volunteerism (2011) and the Paul Harris Fellow Award (2012)

St. George

Jack Tolhurst

Year of Birth: 1924

  • Founding member of the St. George Minor Hockey Association. Served many years on the executive in all positions
  • Executive member of the Grand Valley Hockey League for many years.
  • Founding member of St. George Minor Ball. Served many years on the executive in all positions.
  • 1948–1949 – Troy Hockey Team – Won the North Brant League
  • 1960s – Coach of the St. George Peanut House League
  • 1982 – Awarded the St. George Minor Hockey Award of Merit, presented to individuals whose years of self-sacrifice and dedicated service are worthy of special recognition. Award recipients are inducted as life members of the association.
  • 1983–1987 – President of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association
  • 1985 – Awarded the George Woolcott Trophy for contributions to minor hockey
  • 1988 – Received the Ontario Minor Hockey Association Honour Award

The Sports Hall of Fame is supported by the following 4 goals:

  1. To recognize individuals and team achievements in the area of sport, fitness and wellness
  2. To recognize the efforts of builders of sport in the community and for the broader sport sector
  3. To foster civic pride by recognizing accomplishments of local athletes, teams and builders
  4. To create public awareness of health and well-being by highlighting individual residents who participate and compete in sport
